Water damage in your basement?
8/22/2022 (Permalink)
Water can do great damage to your home, including the loss of personal items, and may uncover previously unknown structural issues or deterioration. Even with prompt removal of the water, your home may incur costly damage. Will your insurance company be there in the event of a basement flood? There are several factors that determine what is and what is not covered.
1. Where did the water come from? Most homeowner's policies typically cover damage from water that originates from the top down, such as rain or melting ice. If the water comes from the bottom, such as from the overflow of a nearby river, you will likely need specific flood insurance.
2. How fast did the flooding or water damage occur? A poorly maintained faucet or toilet that slowly leaked, for example, would not qualify for insurance coverage. However, if a pipe suddenly bursts and leaves your basement flooded, this is likely to fall within your coverage limitations.
3. What type of policy or policies do you have? A basic homeowner's policy with dwelling coverage will extend to water damage as described above to your flooring, drywall, and many other structures in your home. Furniture, appliances, and other personal items will probably not be covered. Personal property insurance is likely to cover items beyond your home’s structural elements in the event that your basement becomes flooded.
4. What else do you need to remember? All insurance policies have deductibles and coverage limitations. Read the fine print and consult your insurance company to be sure your home and belongings will be covered.
If the worst happens to your basement, be sure to consult a professional to minimize damage, regardless of the cause or your insurance coverage. Dealing with a basement is no picnic, but with proper cleanup and drying, damages can be reduced to limit your out-of-pocket costs and to preserve the structure and aesthetics of your home.
One way to prevent fires in your home
8/17/2022 (Permalink)
lets start by talking about lamps. Sometimes they look like really great coat racks or even a place to store your hats. Unfortunately this is a great way to start a fire. One of our customers was using her desk lamp in the spare bedroom to store her hats. She had a guest staying over night and that person was using the lamp to read a book. This caused the hats to catch on fire. Luckily the fire was contained to just that one room and not the whole house. There was smoke damage in the hall way that needed to be cleaned up. Its never a good idea to use a lamp as a storage devices. We were there to help our customer and she learned a very valuable lesson, as did the guest.
The damage fire can do
8/16/2022 (Permalink)
It might not seem like a big thing until its too late. In this case the fire had started in the garage but was not heard until the fire had already spread. When working in the home we noticed smoke detectors had been displaced from their original locations. We gladly provided smoke detectors for the home but had they been in place they may have prevented more damage. Fire Damage was not the only predator at this fire though with Water Mitigation being a huge part of the work. Julie who works with us was in charge of all the inventory for this home. Almost all of the items in the garage had to be salvaged. We love turning back the clock and making it "Like it never even happened," but there are some things that cant be replaced like family photos. We would like to see all homes at all times outfitted with smoke detectors and some day hopefully we will.

Commercial basement flood
8/5/2022 (Permalink)
A basement can flood at any time. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your basement could flood, including:
- A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
- Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
- Storm sewer backup
- Sanitary sewer backup
- Foundation drainage failure
- Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
- And many more
If flood water is not handled quickly and properly, it can jeopardize your health and safety, and cause severe damage to your home’s structure. Remember, the longer you wait, the worse the problem will get.
The bottom line: a flooded basement can jeopardize your health, safety, and your home’s integrity. It’s worth making a call to SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley to allow our trained, professional crews to handle the situation safely and correctly. We have earned the trust of hundreds of homeowners, business owners, and property professionals.

Different levels of water damage
8/5/2022 (Permalink)
Water damage from a category 1 classification is from clean and sanitary sources, such as:
- Water lines
- Faucets
- Toilet tanks
- Drinking fountains
- Showerheads
- Rainwater (sometimes)
Although this water is clean, it does not come without risks. If it is not cleaned quickly, it can degrade into category 2—leading to health issues for those inhabiting the structure.
Category 2 – Grey Water Damage
Water damage from a category 2 classification is from sources that have a level of contaminants that may cause illness or discomfort if ingested. These sources include:
- Dishwashers
- Washing machines
- Toilets with urine, but not feces
- Other sources where water has been used
Category 3 – Black or Unsanitary Water Damage
Water damage from a category 3 classification, sometimes called black water, contains dangerously unsanitary contaminants. It could cause serious illness, or even death if ingested. Category 3 water damage includes water from:
- Sewers
- Toilets with feces
- Rivers or streams
- Stagnant water bodies that have become a habitat for bacterial growth

When the thunder rolls
8/5/2022 (Permalink)
Lightning
- Always take shelter during a lightning storm.
- There is no safe place outside during a thunderstorm. Safe shelter can be found either in an enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle.
- If you can see lightning or hear thunder, you are in danger of being hit. Seek shelter immediately.
- Wait 30 minutes after the last lightning strike in a severe storm before venturing outside again.
- Do not ride bicycles, motorcycles, tractors, or golf carts. These will not protect you from a lightning strike.
Thunderstorms
- During thunderstorms, you should also stay away from items that conduct electricity, such as corded telephones, appliances, sinks, bathtubs, radiators and metal pipes.
Once the storm has passed and if you have damage, call SERVPRO of Milwaukie Happy Valley, we are always here to help!
Summer storms
8/5/2022 (Permalink)
When most of us think about summer, we think about lots of sun and lots of heat. Because the weather is so pleasant, many of us spend more time outdoors, enjoying time with family.
But if it sometimes seems as though there’s also more rain during the summer, that would be because it’s totally true. During the summer, the two components needed for storms—moisture and warm air—are out in full force in many parts of the country. That means thunderstorms become more likely.
Take this info with a grain of salt. In our area this summer, we’re facing oppressive heat and very dry conditions, which have set us up for wildfire hazards. Our rainiest season comes a little later in the year, when October rolls around. File these tips away for the occasional rainy summer day—and keep them handy throughout the fall and winter!
No matter the time of year, it’s important to heed weather warnings. Always pay attention to storm alerts and consider cancelling outdoor events if heavy storms are predicted.
Local weather forecasts will often be the most accurate. Invest in an NOAA Weather radio so that you can continue to access these vital weather alerts even if the power goes out.
During storms with heavy rainfall, flooding is always possible, so stay alert. Heavy storms can also bring intense winds, which can fell tree branches and send items outside your home flying. Keep your trees trimmed back, and when inclement weather is predicted, pull outdoor furniture and other items inside or secure them.
Dozens of people die every year in storm-related incidents, so caution is always the best choice. Keep an eye on the weather conditions and know what to do when they strike.
When lightning is in the area, go indoors. Even if you can’t see lightning, if you hear thunder, lightning is in the area. Stay inside until at least 30 minutes after you hear the last bit of thunder.
Your mother was right—you should stay away from windows and avoid bathing or showering during a storm.
Because severe weather can strike fast, plan ahead by creating an emergency kit and knowing the evacuation routes for your area.
In cases of intense rain, flash floods can occur. Never attempt to drive through flood water, since only a few inches of rain can have a disastrous effect.

Help your kids get prepared for the storm
7/29/2022 (Permalink)
Here at SERVPRO of Milwaukie/ Happy Valley, we believe in the importance of preparedness. With winter storms looming on our horizon, it’s more important than ever to ensure the children in your household are prepared.
In a report titled “Bringing Youth Preparedness Education to the Forefront,” created by the National Commission on Children and Disasters, the researchers asserted that children should not be treated the same as adults when it comes to disaster preparedness. They found that many preparedness training and education programs didn’t explicitly account for youth, while also asserting that children are not passive victims during a disaster event and therefore should be accounted for.
While the report was created from data collected in the early 2010s, it brings valid insight into how we can better prepare our community’s youth. Below, you will find resources for the children in your life to explore preparedness, often structured as a family activity.
- Prepare for disaster with Ready Wrigley! Description: “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has created Ready Wrigley to provide young children, parents, guardians, and teachers with tips, activities, and a story to help the whole family prepare for emergencies.”
- Have your child play fun, interactive games that focus on responding and preparing for disaster events! Disaster Master| Build a Kit
- Help the children in your life cope after a storm event with Trinka and Sam: The Rainy Windy Day.
No matter what storm event may lie ahead, these tools are a great way to start preparing every member in your family - you can even find resources for pet preparedness!
If you and your family end up sustaining property damage during a storm event, trust that SERVPRO of Milwaukie/ Happy Valley is ready to help you recover. Call us any time, any day at 503-652-3997.
Ground water flooding your basement?
7/29/2022 (Permalink)
Ground water is a pain, especially when it gets high enough it starts seeping through your vents. Unfortunately, not all insurance companies will cover a ground water claim because it is considered a natural cause. Ground water is easily contaminated and is nearly always the result of human activity. In areas where population density is high and human use of the land is intensive, ground water is especially vulnerable. Just as ground water generally moves slowly, so do contaminants in ground water. Because of this slow movement, contaminants tend to remain concentrated in the form of a plume. Virtually any activity whereby chemicals or wastes may be released to the environment, either intentionally or accidentally, has the potential to pollute ground water. When ground water becomes contaminated, it is difficult and expensive to clean up. Call SERVPRO of Milwaukie/ Happy Valley if you have ground water in your basement/ crawlspace. We are ALWAYS here to help!

how to prevent dryer fires
7/15/2022 (Permalink)
Did you know that the dryer vents in your home can be a fire hazard if not taken care of properly! Dryer fires are unfortunately common. To prevent this type of fire from happening it is important to take some precautions
- Clean out the lint trap after each load
- Make sure if there is any damage to the dryer it is looked at by a professional
- Clean out dryer vents regularly or check for clogs
- Clean out air ducts and check for clogs
- Make sure the dryer is hooked up to the appropriate electrical outlet (having a dryer hooked up to a socket with not enough volts can cause electrical fires)
- Check your pockets to make sure nothing flammable or hazardous get in the dryer
These simple preventative actions can save you a great deal of grief.
Tips on how to create a fire escape plan
7/15/2022 (Permalink)
Do you have a fire escape plan in your home? Here are some helpful tips on creating one with your family to keep everyone safe in case of a fire.
First you are going to draw up a floor plan of your home. While doing that you are going to label each room and identify each doorway and window. After you have it drawn up and the labels done you want to plan two escape routes from each room. You could make these in red to show they are escapes routes in case of emergency. Now that you have planned on how to get out safely you want to find a safe place outside for everyone to meet. Make sure this location is easy to access to from every side of the home and far enough away that you aren’t in dangers way. A certain light post across the street is a good idea or the neighbor’s mailbox. It is smart to go over this safety plan with your family regularly and have it posted somewhere everyone is going to see it. It’s always best to be prepaid for an emergency that doesn’t happen then to not be prepaid for an emergency happening now.

The process of restoring the structure after a fire is not a small process. That is why the professionals are here to help. We will let you know what we think is going to be the best process to getting your home back to looking "Like it never even happened." Like always we are here to help.
Difference between smoke detector and smoke alarms
7/12/2022 (Permalink)
Smoke detectors are sensing devices. That means that they sense the smoke. They then send a signal to the fire alarm system set in place which sets off the fire alarm and or sprinkler system if one is in place. Smoke alarms not only sense the smoke they also sound the alarm from inside the device. They are the all in one smoke alarm/detection device.
At the end of the day they both will alarm you if I fire is started, you just have to chose which is best for you.
Smoke detector
- Have stand alone fire alarm system
- Wanting to put in a stand alone fire alarm system
Smoke alarm
- No stand alone fire system
- Wanting the ability to install where you seem fit
What happens now that you know which of your belongings are deemed salvageable after a fire?
7/7/2022 (Permalink)
Our team arrives with all our packing supplies and packs up everything that needs to be cleaned. While the belongings are being packed, we are documenting everything. Each box gets a numbered label, that number will tell us what the contents of the box holds in our system, which allows us to categorize it. Once everything is packed, we load it and transfer the belongings to our warehouse.
Now it’s time to clean!
Our team cleans one box at a time. For materials that can not get wet we use a specific technology to remove soot, debris, and dust. For materials that can get wet we use SERVPRO proprietary technology cleaners. This also removes soot, debris, odors, and dust. For items that are heavily damaged from the smoke we use a different protocol. Now that the items have been cleaned and dried, we deodorize all the contents. To deodorize the contents, we use commercial ozone generation to remove left over odor and not a masking agent. The technology we use is formulated to not destroy any of the items.
The very last part of the cleaning process is securing the boxes closed and storing them in our warehouse until they are ready to be delivered back to their owners.

Here in this picture you can see the extent of the damage, a water leak from the top floor found its way to the basement causing drywall, flooring, some appliances and personal belongings to be affected. After removing affected materials, drying equipment was placed to ensure no mold would occur, monitoring appointments would be set to check on progress of drying everyday to make sure our drying plan was sufficient. After drying is complete, the rebuild can start to get your home back into preloss condition. "Like it never even happened."

Simple water damage can much bigger than expected
6/10/2021 (Permalink)
Not a simple water job!
This customer called us with what would seem to some, a simple water damage. We arrived on site and did our inspection and what we found surprised the home owner. We were able to source the garbage disposal was leaking however it had been leaking for a while. We had to break the news to the home owner that we found microbial growth.
You will see what looks like a simple wet flooring, however under that flooring and on the wall was some pretty strong growth.
The flooring was removed down to the sub floor as well as the cabinets, sink and stove.
What seems to be a small water damage or simple leak can manifest into a much larger problem if not addressed immediately.
If you think you have even the smallest amount of water damage call SERVPRO of Milwaukie/ Happy Valley 503-652-3997.

Molds are usually not a problem indoors, unless mold spores land on a wet or damp spot and begin growing.
Molds are part of the natural environment. Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided. Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air. Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet. There are many types of mold, and none of them will grow without water or moisture. It is impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores indoors; some mold spores will be found floating through the air and in house dust. The mold spores will not grow if moisture is not present. Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented or controlled by controlling moisture indoors. If there is mold growth in your home, you must clean up the mold and fix the water problem.

Ground water from a big rain storm resulted in this flooded crawl space.
Ground water is a pain, especially when it gets high enough it starts seeping through your vents. Unfortunately, not all insurance companies will cover a ground water claim because it is considered a natural cause. Ground water is easily contaminated.Ground water contamination is nearly always the result of human activity.

Fun family activities that prepare children for storm events
6/9/2021 (Permalink)
To read the report in full, visit Ready.Gov here.
Disaster Master | Build a Kit

Leaky Air Vents?
6/7/2021 (Permalink)
Leaky Air Vents
Not all water damages are big and chaotic, some are small and harmless like this one in the picture below. Here we have an air vent that has a small amount of water leaking out of it. Around the vent, the water has made the drywall wet, as long as there is no insulation it can be dried in place making the process short and sweet. Even though this is a pretty small damage we know it can be a big deal to home owners and/ or tenants and we would treat it as so. Our staff here at SERVPRO of Milwaukie/ Happy Valley are trained in handling the situation calmly keeping you updated the whole way through to help put your mind at ease. Water damage can happen to anyone so don't feel singled out!

According to Portland General Electric, a portable generator is the most common choice for homes. A portable generator can be useful when it comes to storm related power outages. Here are some generator safety tips from Portland General Electric that will help keep you and your family safe!
- Always operate your portable generator outside.
- Use only an outdoor-rated, ground extension cord to avoid getting shocked.

- If using a gas-powered generator, use extreme cause as they can get very hot.
- Always keep children and pets away from generators.
- Turn of all equipment powered by the generator being shutting the generator down.

Are you Prepared
6/7/2021 (Permalink)
Are you prepared for a power outage or storm event? SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley has compiled a list of items that may be useful to you if you find yourself without power for a couple of days.
- A camping stove and propane
If you do not have a gas stove, then you should have easy access to a camping stove and propane. This will allow you to cook meals during a power outage. Please make sure that you use the camping stove outside only, no matter how cold it is!
Candles provide a cheap way to light up your house once the sun goes down. Having a good supply of candles and matches allows for you to have light to help keep some sort of normalcy during a power outage. Remember to never leave candle unattended
This may seem like an easy one, but it’s often forgotten about. You should have foods that you can cook on the camp stove or right out of the box: and they should be foods that you enjoy! Lots of snacks can help makes things seem more ‘normal’ during a power outage as well.
With no electricity, you most likely won’t have any hot water. Baby wipes can help keep you clean in-between showers.
- Full tank of gas and a car charger
Having a full tank of gas will allow you to run your car while you are inside of it to help warm you up. This also provides opportunity to charge your cell phone! But please, do not run your car within your garage.

Water Damage Areas In Your Happy Valley Home
6/4/2021 (Permalink)
Every home and property has unique challenges when it comes to extracting water and drying out the structure. These are four of the most common areas.
Every home and property has unique challenges when it comes to extracting water and drying out the structure. These are four of the most common areas and why they prove to be so difficult.
Duct Work
Some duct systems made of fragile and porous materials make it difficult to dry and set up drying equipment.
Attic Space
Attic spaces can be hard to get equipment into and may have electrical hazards. Oftentimes attic spaces require that insulation is removed to properly dry the space.
Crawlspace
Crawlspace may be hard to work in and place drying equipment into. Low temperatures can make it difficult to warm the space and properly dry it.
Basements
Many basements are unfinished with lots of porous materials that would need disposing of due to possible contamination in water.
No matter the space or the cause of damage, SERVPRO of Milwaukie/ Happy Valley is always Here to Help when disaster strikes. We have crews who are on call 24/7 because we know that when disaster strikes there is no time to wait.
Why SERVPRO? Advanced Technology!
6/4/2021 (Permalink)
At SERVPRO of Milwaukie/ Happy Valley, our cleaning and mitigation services are powered by advanced technology. Contact us today to learn more.
What does advanced technology have to do with restoration and cleaning? Quite a lot, actually. When we at SERVPRO show up to a job, yes, we do apply a lot of old-fashioned elbow grease. But, equally important, we deploy advanced devices and products to create a safe, healthful environment for you.
Let’s look at some of the technology SERVPRO draws on when we’re cleaning and restoring your structures and contents.
Soggy Business
Water damage can be a real bear to deal with. First, there’s getting rid of standing water. Then, there’s locating hidden dampness and addressing it as well.
If anything’s missed, it can result in damage down the road. Luckily, SERVPRO has tools to help us find and conquer moisture of all kinds.
Moisture Meters. Water can lurk below floors, in carpets and drywall, even above ceilings. To locate hidden water, we use devices like a hygrometer to measure the humidity in a space. Another device for finding remaining dampness is an infrared meter. Yes, that’s the same meter that shows nifty heat maps. It works for finding water because wet spots tend to be cooler than dry ones.
Industrial Drying Equipment. After we find any hidden water, SERVPRO uses industrial-grade technology to get rid of it. For instance, we might use high-powered dehumidifiers and fans to draw water out of air and porous surfaces. A thorough drying can prevent mold growth in the future, as well as stopping material such as wood from warping and losing their shape.
The Chemistry of Clean
When we turn to cleaning and disinfecting, SERVPRO selects devices and disinfecting products that can effectively purify air and surfaces. After fires, floods or other disasters, we use industrial scrubbers to remove mold, smoke and other odor-causing contaminants from the air.
For surfaces, we select from OSHA-approved cleaners and disinfectants to destroy bacteria, fungi, molds and other contaminants. We’re always looking to stay at the cutting edge of disinfection science. For instance, in 2020 we addressed the new threat of the COVID-19 pandemic by deploying EPA-certified disinfecting products.
From emergency cleaning to routine disinfection, we’re there for you. Contact us at any hour for a consultation or immediate assistance.

Does your insurance coverage meet your needs?
6/2/2021 (Permalink)
I am sure that you have thought about a fire escape plan as well as checking on your smoke detectors. But have you ever thought about what happens to all the stuff in your home in the case of a fire? Renters, homeowners, and condo insurance policies have contents coverage that helps get your contents cleaned or replaced following a fire.
Contents coverage can vary depending on the policy. It is important to make sure you have enough content coverage for the worst-case scenario. The best way to come up with this number is to spend a weekend and inventory your house, especially the more expensive items. Not only will this help you with deciding how much content coverage you will need, but it also will be beneficial if you do ever experience a fire. By having your own inventory of items, you can work with SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley and your insurance company easier to make sure that all of your contents are either being cleaned or replaced.

- Don’t leave your barbecue unattended, especially when children are present.
- Keep a bucket of water, water hose, or fire extinguisher nearby to extinguish a fire if needed.
- Use charcoal lighter fluid sparingly and with extreme caution. Never squirt “just a little more” once the fire is lit (even if it’s just smoking) - fire can shoot back up the fluid stream and explode.
- Used briquettes/ashes can stay hot for several days - dispose of them in a metal container and store the container away from combustibles such as decks, furniture, or structures.
- When you change propane tanks/bottles, check the fittings to ensure proper seal and fit before using.
- HAVE FUN AND BE SAFE!

Memorial Day
5/24/2021 (Permalink)
Memorial Day!
This United States federal holiday is observed on the last Monday of May to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the military. In 2021, Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 31.
There are many ways to observe the National Moment of Remembrance, both formally and informally. The moment of silence can be observed more formally at places such as a veterans cemetery, park, picnic ground and can include playing ‘Taps’, the military bugle call that reflects on the glory of those who have shed blood for us. A bell can also be rung at the beginning and end of the one minute of remembrance. Please try to remember to explain the meaning of this holiday to the youth in your family.
Have a Safe and Wonderful holiday!
Smoke Detector Maintenance

How to change a battery in a smoke detector.
Properly Maintain Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarm safety only works when alarms are properly maintained and placed correctly. The following tips will help ensure your smoke alarms remain in proper working order: - Test units monthly.
- Install new batteries immediately when the low-battery warning alarm sounds or at least once a year, make it on a day you will remember, for example a birthday holiday.
- Clean smoke alarms regularly by vacuuming them with a brush attachment.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years to achieve optimum performance.
Smoke alarms are essential to protecting the people in your house from home fires. No matter the cause of the fire or its location, properly functioning smoke alarms are there to help alert everyone to the presence of fire in time to evacuate safely. These life-saving devices are affordable, easily purchased online or in most local retail stores, and only require a few minutes of maintenance each month. Take a few minutes today to ensure your home has the appropriate number of smoke alarms and that they are properly located and regularly tested and maintained.

Not all water damages are big and chaotic, some are small and harmless. Here we have an air vent that has a small amount of water leaking out of it. Even though this is a pretty small damage we know it can be a big deal to homeowners and/or tenants and we would treat it as so. Our staff are trained in handling the situation calmly keeping you updated the whole way through to help put your mind at ease. Water damage can happen to anyone so don't feel singled out! Call SERVPRO of Milwaukie Happy Valley today for your water damage needs.
Smoke Detector Safety
4/20/2020 (Permalink)
It might not seem like a big thing until it's too late. We love turning back the clock and making it "Like it never even happened," but there are some things that can't be replaced like family photos. We would like to see all homes at all times outfitted with smoke detectors and some day hopefully we will.

Your Sprinkler

Although sprinkler systems can be intended to provide a great service they can unfortunately be accidentally tripped.
In this case a group of young children were rough housing in the apartment alone when one of them hit the sprinkler system on the ceiling. To their surprise a hurricane ensued and drenched the entire apartment.
Remember to NEVER hang anything on your sprinkler system no matter how cute and they can be set off with an aggressive bump. No rough housing indoors unless you bring your swim suit.

Are you prepared?
4/16/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial Mold
4/16/2020 (Permalink)
If there is mold growth in your business, you must clean up the mold and fix the water problem. Call SERVPRO of Milwaukie Happy Valley, help us help you!
Seeking help for your business

When seeking professional fire damage restoration services, clients can begin by looking at their insurance covers. They should confirm whether the plan covers restoration activities, a scenario that could relieve them financially. In most instances, their insurance providers will ask them to fill a form. These companies will usually determine the financial repercussions of the fire incident. The restoration specialists would also have to complete certain forms. The process of restoring the structure after a fire
Smoke damage and fire restoration companies usually specialize in several types of restoration activities. An example is the desiccant dry air restoration, which eliminates excess moisture. This allows important documents like books, licenses and certificates to dry up quickly and efficiently. The other form of restoration is vacuum freeze restoration that restores photographs and books to their former selves.
Amazingly, it does this without warping them excessively.

Common Causes of Residential Fires in Milwaukie, Oregon
1/19/2020 (Permalink)
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there are 5 main causes of home fires: cooking, heating, electrical, smoking, and candles. Below are safety tips for keeping your home safe from a fire:
- Cooking
- Always stay in the kitchen when cooking something on the stovetop
- Heat oils slowly to temperate
- Add food slowly to the pan to avoid splashing
- Always cook with a lid next to your pan to suffocate a fire if the need ever arises
- Heating
- Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from any heating equipment
- Never use your oven to heat your home
- Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional
- Electrical
- Have all electrical work done by a qualified professional
- Only have one heat-producing appliance plugged into an outlet at a time
- Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended for temporary use. Have a qualified electrician add more receptacle outlets so you don’t have to use extension cords.
- Smoking
- If you smoke, smoke outside. Most deaths result from fires that started in living rooms, family rooms and dens or in bedrooms
- Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches, and other smoking materials up high out of the reach of children, in a locked cabinet.
- Use a deep, sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn
- Candles
- Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.
- Keep candles at least 1 foot (30 centimeters) away from anything that can burn.
- Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage. Never use candles

1/14/2020 (Permalink)
I am sure that you have thought about a fire escape plan as well as checking on your smoke detectors. But have you ever thought about what happens to all the stuff in your home in the case of a fire? Renters, homeowners, and condo insurance policies have contents coverage that helps get your contents cleaned or replaced following a fire.
Contents coverage can vary depending on the policy. It is important to make sure you have enough content coverage for the worst-case scenario. The best way to come up with this number is to spend a weekend and inventory your house, especially the more expensive items. By having your own inventory of items, you can work with SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley and your insurance company easier to make sure that all of your contents are either being cleaned or replaced.

Dishwasher Water Damage
3/17/2019 (Permalink)
We receive a lot of calls about water damage in kitchens. Upon arrival to the job, our technicians often find that the cause of the water loss is due to the dishwasher. There are three main causes of a dishwasher leak:
Supply Line
The water supply line that comes standard to most dishwasher is a copper tube. Copper tends to decay over time which leads to leaks or a total detachment. It is important to check your supply line twice a year to make sure that it is in good shape. It is also recommended that you replace the copper supply line with a stainless-steel tube for more durability.
Water Inlet Valve
There is a valve under your dishwasher that can slowly leak over time. Taking off the bottom, front plate of your dishwasher and checking for leaks twice a year is a great way to monitor if a leak is occurring.
Gasket Leaks
A gasket acts as a seal. If you have water pooling in front of your dishwasher after using it, this may be a sign of a weak door gasket.
If you notice any sort of dishwasher leak, call SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley immediately at 503-652-3997. We will answer the phone 24/7, 365 days a year to lead your water damage restoration and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Clackamas, Oregon Power Outage Supplies
3/11/2019 (Permalink)
Clackamas, Oregon and surrounding areas are expecting (AGAIN!) snow this week. Are you prepared for the power outage that may accompany it?

If you are going to be away from your home for an extended time during the winter, use these tips from your locally owned and operated SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley to prevent your pipes from freezing:
- Don’t lower your heat too much. A lower temperature can help keep your heating costs down, but if a cold snap stakes and pipes that normally would be safe, can freeze and burst

You can do that by shutting off your water at your main shut off site and turning on every water fixture in your house until the water stops running. When returning home, simply turn your water back on and turn on every water fixture until water starts flowing again.

Fire Evacuation Planning Tips
1/29/2019 (Permalink)
According to The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), once the smoke alarm sounds you have as little as a minute or two to evacuate the residence. No one plans to have a fire, but everyone should have a plan in case there is a fire. SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley wants to remind you of these tips that can be essential for evacuating during a fire.
- Include all residents in the plan. Drawing a floor plan of your house with the highlighted escape route can be helpful, especially for children.
- If you have infants or family members with mobility issues, have someone assigned to be the one to assist them during an emergency.
- Make an escape plan that include two exits from each room and practice it.
- Ensure that your street numbers are clearly visible from the road so that firefighters can find your house with ease.
- Have a designated area outside away from the house as a meeting spot
- Never reenter a burning building. If someone is missing, let the 911 dispatcher know.

Water damage by washing machine.
Washing Machines Study fact A burst water supply line caused half of all water damage incidents involving washing machines. On average, these incidents caused more than $6,000 in damage per incident. Loss prevention and maintenance tips
1. Turn supply valves off when not in use.
2. Consider installing a lever-type valve that is easy to operate between uses.
3. Do not operate the washing machine while the home is unoccupied.
4. Leave a 3 to 4 inch gap between the back of the washing machine and the wall to avoid kinking the hose near the valve connection.

6. Ensure that the connection to the valve is secure, but avoid over-tightening.
7. Hand tighten first. Then tighten an additional 2/3 of a turn using pliers.

Mold prevention tips

Take care of your mold to keep you family safe
MOLD PREVENTION TIPS
- Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
- Be sure your home has enough ventilation. Use exhaust fans which vent outside your home in the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure your clothes dryer vents outside your home.
- Fix any leaks in your home’s roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have moisture to grow.
- Clean up and dry out your home thoroughly and quickly (within 24–48 hours) after flooding.
- Add mold inhibitors to paints before painting.
- Clean bathrooms with mold-killing products.
- Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried promptly. Consider not using carpet in rooms or areas like bathrooms or basements that may have a lot of moisture.
Signs of Mold
5/14/2018 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Milwaukie Happy Valley to get your mold tested.
Visible mold growth might seem like an obvious sign of mold. However many people don't notice small amounts of mold growth or they think it's just soot or dirt. Sometimes people simply ignore visible mold in their house.
If you can see mold growth, even if it's only small, you should take action immediately. Small mold patches can spread and the fact that there is any mold shows that the conditions in your home are right for mold to grow. If you have concerns SERVPRO of Milwaukie Happy Valley is here to help.
Sometimes you might not realize there is mold in your house, especially if it is unusual looking mold. Some mold growth looks white and thread-like. Other mold appears as clusters of small black spots. Mold can be black, gray-brown, gray-green or white in color. Mold growing behind wallpaper made of vinyl can even appear orange, pink or purple.
Ice Storm
5/14/2018 (Permalink)
Icy roads and power lines down.
Ice storms
- Ice from freezing rain accumulates on branches, power lines and buildings. If you must go outside when a significant amount of ice has accumulated, pay attention to branches or wires that could break due to the weight of the ice and fall on you. Ice sheets could also do the same.
- Never touch power lines. A hanging power line could be charged (live) and you would run the risk of electrocution. Remember also that ice, branches or power lines can continue to break and fall for several hours after the end of the precipitation.
- When freezing rain is forecast, avoid driving. Even a small amount of freezing rain can make roads extremely slippery. Wait several hours after freezing rain ends so that road maintenance crews have enough time to spread sand or salt on icy roads.
- Rapid onsets of freezing rain combined with the risks of blizzards increase the chances for extreme hypothermia. If you live on a farm, move livestock promptly to shelter where feed is available. Forage is often temporarily inaccessible during and immediately after ice storms. Animal reactions to ice storms are similar to that of blizzards.
Thunder and Lighting Safety Tips
5/14/2018 (Permalink)
Thunder and lighting strike close to home

Commercial Mold
4/18/2018 (Permalink)
Mold
Seeking professional help

Fire in commercial building
Ground water

Ground water was the result of this crawlspace flood
Ground water is a pain, especially when it gets high enough it starts seeping through your vents. Unfortunately, not all insurance companies will cover a ground water claim because it is considered a natural cause. Ground water is easily contaminated.Ground water contamination is nearly always the result of human activity. Mold is EVERYWHERE, indoors, outdoors, on your pets, even in your AC /heating systems. Mold spores are microscopic and cant be seen floating around in the air, but mold itself can be identified by its musty smell or "dirt" smell. It can cause a number of issues in your home like eating away the structure itself causing structural damage which could result in a very pricey rebuild. It can also cause respiratory issues such as throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. If you have immune compromised people or people with chronic lung illnesses such as obstructive lung disease that live in your home, mold could cause serious infections. Around the vent, the water has made the drywall wet, as long as there is no insulation it can be dried in place making the process short and sweet. Even though this is a pretty small damage we know it can be a big deal to home owners and/ or tenants and we would treat it as so. Our staff are trained in handling the situation calmly keeping you updated the whole way through to help put your mind at ease. Water damage can happen to anyone so don't feel singled out!

1. Don't eat raw cookie dough. We know it's delicious and oh-so tempting, but don't eat any kind of raw cookie dough, even if it doesn't have eggs in it or it is prepackaged.
2. Hand washing after handling eggs. One easy way to do this is to wash your hands with warm water and soap.make sure to scrub them well and for at least 20 seconds!
3. Keep countertops clean. Many holiday cookie dough recipes require you roll out your dough on the counter. Once you are finished sanitize using a sanitizing spray or rinse for cleaning counters. Mix one teaspoon bleach to 1 quart water to keep your baking workspace safe and clean.

Deep Frying Turkey Safety Tips
12/4/2017 (Permalink)
- Keep outdoor fryers off decks, out of garages and a safe distance away from trees and other structures.
- Make sure the turkey is thawed and dry before cooking. Ice or water that mixes into the hot oil can cause flare-ups.
- Watch the weather. Never operate a fryer outdoors in the rain or snow.
- Place the fryer on a level surface, and avoid moving it once it's in use.
- Leave 2 feet between the tank and the burner when using a propane-powered fryer.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid overfilling. Oil can ignite when it makes contact with the burner.
- Choose a smaller turkey for frying. A bird that's 8 to 10 pounds is best; pass on turkeys over 12 pounds.
- Never leave fryers unattended.
- Purchase a fryer with temperature controls, and watch the oil temperature carefully. Cooking oil that is heated beyond its smoke point can catch fire. If you notice the oil is smoking, turn the fryer off.
- Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once the turkey is submerged, turn the burner on.
- Wear goggles to shield your eyes, use oven mitts to protect your hands and arms and keep a grease-rated fire extinguisher close by.
- Skip the stuffing when frying turkey, and avoid water-based marinades.
- Keep children and pets away from the fryer at all times.
- Once finished, carefully remove the pot from the burner, place it on a level surface and cover to let the oil cool overnight before disposing.
- Opt for an oil-less fryer. This uses infrared heat, rather than oil, to cook the turkey.
Chimney Fire Awareness
12/4/2017 (Permalink)
Chimney fires don't have to happen. Here are some ways to avoid them :
Use seasoned woods only (dryness is more important than hard wood versus soft wood considerations)
Build smaller, hotter fires that bum more completely and produce less smoke
Never burn cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, trash or Christmas trees; these can spark a chimney fire
Install stovepipe thermometers to help monitor flue temperatures where wood stoves are in use, so you can adjust burning practices as needed
Have the chimney inspected and cleaned on a regular basis.
- According to the latest statistics available, there are over25,000 Chimney Fires per year in the US that are responsible for over 125 million dollars in property damage. The most sobering statistics relate to deaths and injuries that can result from chimney fires that spread into house fires.
Fire Damage Disaster
12/4/2017 (Permalink)
It might not seem like a big thing until its too late. In this case the fire had started in the garage but was not heard until the fire had already spread. When working in the home we noticed smoke detectors had been displaced from their original locations. We gladly provided smoke detectors for the home but had they been in place they may have prevented more damage. Fire Damage was not the only predator at this fire though with Water Mitigation being a huge part of the work. Julie who works with us was in charge of all the inventory for this home. Almost all of the items in the garage had to be salvaged. We love turning back the clock and making it like it never happened but there are some things that cant be replaced like family photos. We would like to see all homes at all times outfitted with smoke detectors and some day hopefully we will.

2. Proper placement of the tree
Prior to setting up the tree, cut approx. 2 inches from the trunk.
Your tree needs to be at least 3 feet away from any heat source, i.e. fireplaces, heat vents, etc.

What a sprinkler system can do

Sprinkler system went off during a party
Although sprinkler systems can be intended to provide a great service they can unfortunately be accidentally tripped.
In this case a group of young children were rough housing in the apartment alone when one of them hit the sprinkler system on the ceiling. To their surprise a hurricane ensued and drenched the entire apartment.
Remember to NEVER hang anything on your sprinkler system no matter how cute and they can be set off with an aggressive bump. No rough housing indoors unless you bring your swim suit.
Water damage and Flooding can be a disastrous time consuming and life changing event, but here at SERVPRO our goal is to make it "Like it never even happened."

Home Damage

This is our response
This is what a response from SERVPRO can look like from the front porch of your home. In the moment of a disaster it can seem like no one is there to help. Within a short while once damage is assessed we will have crews on site ready for any situation at any time. Our staff is well trained with IICRC, Mold, Bio, Fire, or any other immediate disaster needs. Working with this crew has been a wonderful experience and it honestly feels great to have the opportunity to help others. I personally cant think of any other field of work or company that I would enjoy working for this much. When you are there to help it gives you a deep gratitude and satisfaction knowing you can spend your days helping others in difficult situations. Just know that if you have a disaster we are always here to help and we as a team will make it "Like it never happened." Fire, Water, Mold, or even a tree falling on your home.
Remember your Smoke Detector

Garage Fire
Sometimes Fire Can Be Scary To Look At

Scariest Arborvitae Fire Ever
When it gets hot and dry outside always try your best to remember cigarette fires can spread from barkdust to the exterior of a home. This fire started from a cigarette which escalated to a arborvitae fire which then encompassed the home. When fire firemen arrived to this blaze they found fire in the attic of the home and the upper levels having to chainsaw holes and vent the roof to spray water into the attic. Thankfully no one was living in the home at the time and it was isolated to this single condominium in Portland on 87th. This is not the first time we have seen this and it will not be the last however best you can though try to remember SERVPRO is there to help.
Girls Night Out Event: Damsels in Defense
5/8/2015 (Permalink)
In September of 2011 two friends founded a company based on their desire to empower women. Mindy Lin and Bethany Hughes created "Damsels in Defense" to fill a market they felt was sorely lacking. Their vision was to create a line of self-defense products that was functional, safe and fun. Their mission is to equip, empower and educate women. Through stylish yet effective products they have succeeded in making women take the initiative to both arm themselves and to learn basic survival tactics. With the rate of crimes against women on the rise, their company has seen significant growth. With over 8,000 Independent Damsel Pros nationwide they are well on their way to meeting their mission of equipping, empowering and educating the women of the world one damsel at a time.
SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley along with Safelight are happy to be offering a free Girls Night Out event so that you can learn about the company first hand. Join us on Thursday, June 18th at the Denny's Banquet Room in Clackamas at 5:30 as Independent Damsel Pro Nicolette Stevens teaches us how to defend ourselves and introduces us to the product line. A light dinner will be served and door prizes will be handed out. We guarantee that it will be both fun and informative. Bring your friends! Damsels in distress don't always have happy endings; learning to defend ourselves is one of the best decisions we may ever make. Please RSVP to lana@SERVPRO9193.com or call 503-652-3997. We really hope to see you there!
