Half of home heater fires occur during the months of December, January, and February. These safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) can help you stay safe and warm this winter!
- Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment. This include furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heaters.
- Never use an oven to heat your house.
- Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
- Turn off portable heaters when you leave the room and do not let them run while you are asleep.
- Check your smoke alarms at least once a month.
- Install and maintain carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in your home.
- Do not light your appliances if you ever smell gas. Leave the residence immediately and call your local fire department.
