Fire Evacuation Planning Tips

According to The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), once the smoke alarm sounds you have as little as a minute or two to evacuate the residence. No one plans to have a fire, but everyone should have a plan in case there is a fire. SERVPRO of Milwaukie/Happy Valley wants to remind you of these tips that can be essential for evacuating during a fire.
- Include all residents in the plan. Drawing a floor plan of your house with the highlighted escape route can be helpful, especially for children.
- If you have infants or family members with mobility issues, have someone assigned to be the one to assist them during an emergency.
- Make an escape plan that include two exits from each room and practice it.
- Ensure that your street numbers are clearly visible from the road so that firefighters can find your house with ease.
- Have a designated area outside away from the house as a meeting spot
- Never reenter a burning building. If someone is missing, let the 911 dispatcher know.
